Top 10 Tallest NBA Players of All Time

Countdown · 10 min read

Basketball is the one major sport where being extremely tall is not a quirk — it is a genuine competitive advantage, and the NBA has always been a home for the giants of the world. Every player on this list stands well over seven feet tall, and the very tallest of them are among the tallest athletes in any professional sport on earth. In the paint they redefine what "size" looks like; on a shared 3D scale they redefine what "human scale" looks like too. What follows is a countdown from the tenth tallest NBA player of all time up to the tallest. Seeing them lined up together on NGFINITY's 2D/3D visualizer makes it obvious that a seven-foot-six centre is not just tall — he is closer to a small car than he is to the average person on the street.

The Countdown — 10 to 1

Mark Eaton

#10 — Mark Eaton 224 cm

American centre Mark Eaton was a defensive legend of the 1980s. He played his entire eleven-year career with the Utah Jazz, was a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and set the NBA's single-season blocks record in 1984–85 with 456 blocks across the full season — an average of 5.56 blocks per game, a mark that has never been broken.

At 224 cm (7'4"), Eaton was one of the tallest players of his era and a perfect example of how height, when paired with discipline and timing, can turn into one of the most impactful defensive careers in league history. On the NGFINITY canvas, he stands a full 49 centimetres above the average adult male.

Slavko Vraneš

#9 — Slavko Vraneš 226 cm

Montenegrin centre Slavko Vraneš played a single season in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2003–04. At 226 cm (7'5"), he was, at the time, tied with several others as one of the tallest players ever to suit up in the league.

He spent the rest of his career in European leagues, where his size made him an equally dominant presence. In the 2D/3D visualizer, Vraneš towers over a standard 180 cm reference figure by nearly half a metre.

Sim Bhullar

#8 — Sim Bhullar 226 cm

Canadian centre Sim Bhullar made history in 2015 when he became the first player of Indian descent to appear in an NBA game, playing for the Sacramento Kings. At 226 cm (7'5"), he was also the tallest player in the league that season.

His brief NBA appearance was a milestone moment for South Asian representation in professional basketball, and his height is a striking visual on the NGFINITY canvas — a full foot and a half above the average man.

Pavel Podkolzin

#7 — Pavel Podkolzin 226 cm

Russian centre Pavel Podkolzin was drafted by the Utah Jazz and played for the Dallas Mavericks in the mid-2000s. His 226 cm (7'5") frame made him one of the tallest players of his generation.

His career was shortened by injuries, but his listed height places him firmly among the all-time giants of the league — a head and shoulders above even the tallest modern centres.

Chuck Nevitt

#6 — Chuck Nevitt 226 cm

American centre Chuck Nevitt played for the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls during a career that spanned the 1980s and early 1990s. At 226 cm (7'5"), he was one of the tallest players to ever win an NBA championship — a title he earned with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1985.

He later had a brief stint with the Chicago Bulls in the early 1990s, but his championship ring came from his time in Los Angeles, not Chicago. On the NGFINITY canvas, his 226 cm frame pairs strikingly with a standard doorway — he would have to duck to walk through most of them.

Tacko Fall

#5 — Tacko Fall 229 cm

Senegalese centre Tacko Fall is one of the tallest players of the modern NBA era. He played for the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers, and his 229 cm (7'6") frame instantly made him a fan favourite during his rookie season.

Fall is also one of the most athletic players at his size — a rare combination that has kept him in the professional game for years. In the 2D/3D visualizer, his listed height of 229 cm makes him a genuine giant: he is a full 54 centimetres taller than the average adult male.

Yao Ming

#4 — Yao Ming 229 cm

Chinese centre Yao Ming is the most famous tall NBA player of the modern era. He was the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, played his entire career for the Houston Rockets, and was an eight-time NBA All-Star.

Yao's 229 cm (7'6") frame made him a genuine cultural phenomenon, bridging the NBA and Chinese audiences in a way no other player has. He is a perfect anchor figure for any tall-person comparison on the NGFINITY canvas: at 229 cm he towers over a standard 180 cm adult by nearly half a metre.

Shawn Bradley

#3 — Shawn Bradley 229 cm

American centre Shawn Bradley stood 229 cm (7'6") and played for the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets and Dallas Mavericks. He was the second overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft and led the league in blocks per game in 1997.

After retirement, Bradley became known to a wider audience through his cameo in the film Space Jam. On the NGFINITY canvas, his 229 cm frame slots neatly between the rest of the 229-club and the two 231 cm giants above him.

Manute Bol

#2 — Manute Bol 231 cm

Sudanese centre Manute Bol is tied for the tallest player in NBA history at 231 cm (7'7"). He played for the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, and remains one of the greatest shot-blockers per minute in league history.

Bol's wingspan was famously measured at over 2.6 metres — longer than the height of most NBA players. That reach, combined with his height, made him a defensive force unlike any other. In the 2D/3D visualizer, his 231 cm frame stands a full 56 centimetres above the average adult male.

Gheorghe Mureșan

#1 — Gheorghe Mureșan 231 cm

Romanian-born Gheorghe Mureșan shares the title of tallest player in NBA history with Manute Bol, at 231 centimetres (7'7"). He played for the Washington Bullets and the New Jersey Nets in the 1990s and won the NBA's Most Improved Player award in 1996.

His listed height is 7 feet 7 inches — taller than the doorframe of a typical house. On a shared 2D/3D scale, Mureșan towers over a standard 180 cm adult by more than half a metre, and only Manute Bol stands level with him. Place him next to a car, a doorway, or a basketball hoop on the NGFINITY canvas, and the scale becomes immediately, unmistakably clear.

Compare Them Yourself

An average adult male is about 175 cm tall — which means every player on this list stands at least half a metre above him. On NGFINITY you can drop all ten NBA giants onto the same canvas and see exactly how they stack up: Mureșan and Bol a full head over Mark Eaton, Yao Ming half a metre above LeBron James. Add a standard 180 cm reference figure, a giraffe, or yourself, and the scale of professional basketball becomes visceral in a way numbers alone never can.
